Where in the world is the Birthday Girl?

The Shontz Fam takes on Venice!
(Brooke took off before they got this snap...)

Is this heaven? Ashley & Brooke brave the Swiss wildlife!

In case you haven't been in touch with the Shontz Family lately, here is a quick update:

This adventuresome crew of five moved to Switzerland for Anthony's work last year, shortly after the arrival of little Matthew and less than two years after Brooke & Andrew joined the family! Ashley was her easy-going self, excited for the fun and the new experience awaiting her. Their stint in the land of neutrality, the alps, and banking has been a whirlwind of fun - they love it there and have immersed themselves fully in their Euro experience, seeing all the sites and forging lifelong friendships. They look forward to another year in Switzerland - coming home Summer 2009 - but they miss their family and friends so much. Perhaps the "missing" influenced their Christmas travel plans; they will be home in the states for a few weeks in December/January and hope to see anyone they can catch while they are in Utah! As you see from the pics, their kiddos are adorable. Andrew & Brooke are a pair of busy toddlers coming up on 3 years old in a few months. And Matthew is a happy one year old. Anthony is keeping busy at work and loving the mountainous terrain! And Ashley is Ashley - soaking up life, loving her family & friends, and yes....turning thirty!
For more on their adventures - check out their blog!

30 and Flirty and Thriving

Ashley Woodbury Shontz,

I have been searching for days for a good digital photo that captured our memorable Bee Sisters Reunion Weekend. I have not been able to find it, but will send it when I do. Happy 30th Birthday, my dear "Bee" sister! You are truly a "golden" old friend. I think we met when you were just 14! And, then, we got to live together in Provo, and the rest is history! That's a long time to be friends. Happy Birthday, my friend. Here's to another fabulous 30. I'm so glad you were born!

Love you,
Whit (Morgan)

Things I love about you

Happy Birthday Ashley!

I am so glad to have met you here in Switzerland. There are many things about you that are so refreshing and infectious.

I love that you served a full time mission. It builds such a strong foundation in the Gospel. Also, there is something wonderful about a person who has had the opportunity to devote so much time and energy in the service of others.

I love that you are intelligent. It is always so nice to talk to you about the books you have read or are reading. I feel like the times we have talked books I have gotten so wrapped up in conversation with you.

I love that you are always seeking to be positive and energetic about life. Your joy seems to burst out of you and bless everyone around you. You are a shining example of the kind of happiness that people look for their whole lives. You have a special ability to lift the people around you no matter how unacquainted you may be with them.

I love that you are a real person. You may not have perfected everything by age 30 but you are striving to be your very best. You are doing amazing things with your family and yourself and it shows. You are a genuine person with your sights set on the important things in life. You care.

You have, no doubt, done many amazing things in your first 30 years. I can only imagine the lives you'll touch and change each year you add to your already beautiful and successful life. Way to go!

Thank you for giving us all a reason to celebrate. I wish you the very best!

 Love, Elisa Parry

Ashleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!

Hey Ashley,

I'm so glad that I can say Happy Birthday to you!  You are a special person, and I'll always remember you for being one of those people in my life who helped me feel cool.  I'll never forget singing "Nearer My God to Thee" on the beach in California (road trip to Chelsea's wedding)and dancing to "It's Raining Men.  As you have gone on to raise your amazingly cute family and live such a life of adventure (your pictures of Europe amaze me), I can't help but marvel at what a strong, vibrant, and valiant woman you are.  Thanks for being my friend and calling me Higgy.  I really hope I get a chance to see you again soon.

Love,
Beth Day

Happy Birthday Ashley

Wow, thirty...seems like just yesterday you were trying to convince me that if you held the car keys and a shopping bag--you'd look "cool".  And that I attended your HS graduation and yelled as loud as I could to make it seem like you had more than one family member there.  Good times.  30, are you sure?  If it IS actually true, then you make 30 look really good.
We all wish we could be with you on your birthday.  Hope you have a great day--we will be thinking of you.  Go go go go go go go, Ripper!
Happy B-day!  Love you.  Thomas, Melissa, Ryan, Lauren, Abby, Alex

Happy 30th Ash!

Ash,
Happy Birthday! I am so blessed to have you as my dear friend. You mean so very much to me and you've blessed my life in so many ways - lots of thoughts come to mind. Your encouragement through life's heartbreaks - you've helped me through some of my toughest days. Calling me at inspired moments. Chatting & laughing through the night until we couldn't keep our eyes open anymore. Being an optimist - I so admire your gift for not worrying. Loving me even when you know my lame weaknesses. Swapping thoughts and recommendations about favorite books and even attempting the occasional long distance book group with me - no book group will ever compare to my Ash! Admiring your toughness - climbing mountains or whooshing down them, moving across country with twins on the way, carting three kids around Europe - always up for any adventure! You've rejoiced with me, cried with me, laughed with me, wished & hoped with me. You've been there for so many of my very important moments - and always there in my moment of need, big and small. So often you are the sounding board and voice of reason that helps me find perspective and much desired calm. The greatest confidante and the dearest friend are you! I love you so much and wish I were there in Switz to treat you to a girls weekend or some free babysitting! I can't wait till you are home and less than six time zones away. Happy, Happy Birthday, dear friend. I am so glad you were born 30 years ago. Here's to the next 30 - I expect great things! Thanks for all that you are. Love you so much!

Holly

Ashley! Happy 30th!

I can still remember at the age of 10—my excitement of hearing mom had a girl! I had a SISTER! What joy I had felt then and still do now. I couldn’t ask for a better sister then you. You lift the spirits of anyone around you...thank you for sharing your energy and joy for all of life’s experiences. I am so grateful for our friendship! And cherish the many great times we have had together. My kids and I have had fun reminiscing and finding great pictures that brought back fond memories.
Just to name a few:
My summer nanny…A-1 driving school…trick or treating on Halloween night...helping out with many birthday parties…you and Anthony entertaining the whole party crew with a nerf football…sharing the wedding cake on your first anniversary... … and so many more.
I love you and Happy 30th Birthday! You deserve the best!
Love you,
Leslie

Ashley,
Have a great birthday! I can’t believe your 30! Live it up and have Anthony take you out on the town!
Love,
Eddie

Happy 30th Birthday Ashley!

I can’t believe that you were 15 when I was born and now I’m 15! You were my nanny for the summer before I turned one. I’m trying to convince my parents they need to send me to Switzerland to be your nanny. I love and miss you! Have a happy birthday.
Love, Britney

One of my favorite memories of you and Anthony is when you went trick or treating at my house dressed as pumpkins. I can remember watching you and Anthony running down the street being chased by a monster on stilts. You guys were great! I love you and hope to see you soon. Have a great b-day.
Love, Courtney

Happy Birthday! I love you! I hope you have a wonderful 30th birthday. I miss you and your family. I wish Brooke, Andrew and Matthew lived closer, so we could play together.
Love, Katie

Happy Birthday! I love you! I miss you and I hope you and your family come to see us soon. Have a happy birthday.

Happy Birthday Ashley!!!

Ashley,

Happy Birthday!  We miss you and can’t wait to see you soon.  Sorry we can’t be with you to celebrate.  Welcome to the 30’s.

Three decades! Wow!

Thirty years of life.  Can you believe it is here?  We have reached a huge milestone and you have lived those years well.  I am so glad to have you as a friend.  I do not know what I would do without you in my life.  I miss you terribly and look forward to you returning stateside.  You are an amazing person, mom, and friend.  Your ability to jet set around the world with three young kids is admirable.  Tyler and I had so much fun visiting you in Switzerland and I hope to be able to come one more time before you leave.  I cannot wait to see you this Christmas.  I do not think it will come soon enough.  I send love, hugs, kisses for you.  I hope you have the best birthday ever.

Love you lots!

Joelle

PS.  I attached some of my favorite pictures from the ski trip, Europe trip, and Kellogg for you to enjoy.

Happy Birthday Ashley!

Ashley,

I feel so thankful we became good friends while you were here in Evanston. We have so much in common and it was SO fun being pregnant at the same time as you (well, for the second time around for you). I loved that we were both Gap Maternity fans and both went a tad overboard in buying lots of clothes to be cute in our prego days. Knitting group was great and I loved taking walks with you and the kiddos, talking about anything, and always having so much fun. You are a wonderful example of smiling through just about everything you do! Thanks for your friendship, support, and kindness. I hope you know that you and Anthony totally got Ben and I hooked on Settlers. We miss hanging out with you guys and I keep hoping you'll be in Switzerland long enough for us to make a trip out there! I know Eli and baby #2 would have so much fun with your darling kids. Smile emoticon Have a wonderful 30th birthday and know that you're in our thoughts!

Love ya!

Radiant You!

How do you do it, Ash? Your smile seems to get bigger with each passing year. You are 30 and perfectly radiant. Thank you for embracing me as a new roommate and friend all those years ago. I could go on reminiscing about the good old days--counting squares of toilet paper, grilling Anthony after your first date, hikes up ol' Timp--but more recently I'm fond of the memory of you and Holly swooping in to sprinkle good cheer and gladness on my wedding day--presenting me with the perfect wedding night basket, making my unforgettable bridal bouquet, and finding the winning hair pin for my unfortunate hair cut ; ) What a grand and devoted friend you are! I love you forever. Enjoy your special day! Big hugs to Anthony and kids. xo, Amy

Captain Jack Kerouac!

Congrats on three decades of greatness! You're an international
superstar deserving of a great birthday. Can't wait to get you guys
back to the homeland and remain hopeful for the east coast. You have a
contagious joy for life that has been missed this side of the Atlantic.
Enjoy this historic occasion and take solace in knowing that as a
Woodbury, nobody will believe you're even close to 30.

Love you Rip,

Matt

Happy, happy birthday to youuuu!

Hi Ashley,

We wish you a wonderful birthday here in Switzerland!!!! I am happy

I hope you have a great 30th birthday.  You are such an amazing person.  You are the happiest, most positive person I know.  I loved getting to know you in Chicago.  And I love reading about your fun adventures in Switzerland.  I am in awe at how much you do with 3 kids.  You have such a beautiful family!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Ash! I'm sure that like everything else in your life, you will make this year a memorable one and fill it with all kinds of adventures. I feel so lucky to have you as a friend. I love your adventurous spirit and how you can smile or laugh your way through anything...even matching sweatpants with balloons on them and permed bangs. I hope you have a great day!

30 Years!! Where does the time go?

Happy, Happy Birthday!!
I hope you have an amazing birthday that you'll remember for years to come. I know its been years since we've seen each other, but I'm grateful for your blog and correspondence to keep us in touch. You're still inspiring me with your amazing accomplishments...i.e. running races, 3 children under 3!! traveling to all different destinations around Europe with 3 pack & plays, 3 car seats, etc... You're an amazing woman and I admire your zeal for life and your "get 'er done" attitude in seizing the moments life brings. I wish we all could celebrate our 30th birthday together. I have so many memories for Hawks Hill Rd. to commando at BYU (initiation). Going through cheerleading initiation together. Looking back at our different hair styles and wondering "what were we thinking?" You're truly a woman to cheer for and I'm grateful to know you and have had many years with you as a friend. I wish you all the best and have a Happy Birthday!
Love,
Mindy

(P.S. Here is a cute picture I have of you and Andrew from that day we went swimming together in Evanston).

my post

Birthday Girl, enjoy these rhymes

About our kooky Kellogg past times…

CIM nights before the twins were born

Bunco nights that went ‘til morn’

Then babies, babies everywhere

Love enough for all to share.

Shopping trips to Gurnee Mills,

Scouring Evanston for cheap thrills.

Parks and picnics, ski trips too

Nothing adventurous you wouldn’t do.

To everything you added fun

We all thought you were a special one.

For every occasion you wore a smile.

A walk in your shoes—a magnificent mile!

Ashley Dear, I miss you so!

I’m glad we’re friends where ere you go!

Love ya, Kara

Happy 30th Ash!

I can't believe how much has changed since I've last seen you!  You and your amazingly adorable family look so happy.  You deserve nothing but the best on this special year.  I still have fond memories of us giggling behind our desks at Cowen.  You truly made that job fun for me.  :)

I haven't talked to you in forever, but I'm doing great and still working at Icon Estates in Napa.  I just got a promotion to Manager Business Analysis, for our 6 domestic wine brands.  Thinking of you often and hope to catch up with you soon!  Love, Liz

'30' cheers for Ash!!

Happy birthday Ashley P. Woodbury Shontz! 3-0!! How did we get so old!?! Where did the time go- seems like yesterday we were going to homecoming and getting our licenses! Happy Birthday Ashley!

I am so grateful that you are my friend!  I am constantly amazed by you- you are not afraid of anything (like traveling ALL over the world with 3 young children).  You have a get-in-and-get-it-done attitude with everything you do.  You are truly inspiring.  I am so glad we were able to get to know each other so quickly in Evanston and I miss our late girl's nights!  Those were the glory days!  Anthony is so lucky to have such a wonderful wife and Andrew, Brooke and Matthew are so lucky to have such an amazing mom!  We are counting down the days until we see you in Utah at Christmas.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Love you tons,
Sarah

Happy 30th!

Happy 30th Ash!  You beat me to it by about two weeks.  It looks like you, Anthony and the kids are still having a great time in Europe.  The little ones are ridiculously adorable (and not necessarily so little anymore).  I try to check in on the blog every month or so to see what you guys are up to, and it seems like there's never a dull moment.  I'm glad to see you so happy - I know this is exactly what you wanted for so long.

I definitely miss hanging out in San Fran.  Hopefully we'll find a way to see each other soon on some random continent.  Till then, keep in touch.  Happy birthday!

This Month Is Such A Special One, It's Birthday Time For You!

Dear Ashley:  I hope you have an incredible birthday.  I can't wait to read about where you go or what you do for the big day.  There couldn't be a better place to celebrate it.  I have loved following you around the world on your blog and think you are one of my cutest friends ever!  Your smile is contagious and your outlook is so positive.  I am grateful for that short time in Evanston to be your neighbor and friend.  Happy 30th Birthday!

Birthday Girl!

To my knitting buddy, Ash. . . Happy 30th birthday!!! How I miss the Kellogg days of many girls' nights, knitting bashes, walks through Evanston, and oh so much more. Like many have already said, you are such an inspiration. I think one of my favorite memories of you is seeing you play, was it badminton??, almost 40 weeks pregnant with twins. Amazing. You are always up for everything and I love that about you. Thanks for being such a bright light! I hope you have a happy birthday. Celebrate big. I miss you guys. Maybe a trip to Switzerland is due?

We are so lucky to have you here in Switzerland with us. I was so

Happy Birthday Ashley!

From our summer together at BYU (playing Rummikub, reading Chinua Achebe, and eating at El Azteca), to our summers together in New York City (attending Yankee games, eating Cuban food, and having you disappear into our bathroom so you could talk to Anthony on the phone while sitting in our bathtub), to your Wednesday wedding in Salt Lake City, to having the chance to live near each other in San Francisco, I'm so glad that through it all I've been able to call you "sister." Happy 30th birthday. Matt and I are rooting hard for you guys to come to the East Coast in 2009!

Hey Ash!
Here's to 30 smashing years. Elsa in the pic here hopes that your birthday meal turns out to be a lot tastier than hers. Happy Birthday!

I just wanted to say that no one knows better than I do what a SUPER supermom Ashley is. After spending two weeks traveling with her and Anthony and their three little ones all over various parts of Europe I was totally amazed! They have this traveling thing (with THREE kids under three no less) down to a science. Ashley had books, treats, movies, songs, and stories (oh and ask her sometime to sing the Bear in the Cave song she created in two seconds sometime!) and kept all three happy campers all during the traveling hours. At night they were all three in bed and out like lights by 9:00 (well, most nights anyway)! I just wanted to say THANKS and Happy Birthday to the greatest Mom and Daughter-in-law in the world.

Love,

Grandma Drake

Happy Birthday Ashley!

Happy 30th from Anthony, Brooke, Andrew, and Matthew!

I’ve been lucky enough to celebrate the last 8 years with you.
Here’s a look at what you’ve done:

From our early days…
Dating, day of engagement, your graduation,
NY during the (long) 2 month engagement, wedding in Salt Lake, Honeymoon in Cancun,
Summer in Colorado, 2002 Winter Olympics in Park City, my Graduation

…kid-free life in California…
GG bridge, Yosemite, Hawaii,
Triathlons, fishing the Sierras, Whistler,
Giants games, climbing Mt. Shasta, San Diego.

…then big changes: leaving jobs, moving (multiple times), new friends. Did I mention 3 kids?
The torpedo, twins arrive, Brookes first tanning session, much needed nap time,
baby blessing, summer in Rockridge, back to Evanston (andour window), 1-yr B-day,
Vail trip and pregnant again!, more pregnant, Matthew joins us, another graduation,
Summer on the beach, bye bye Kellogg, bye bye Chicago, hello St. George

Across the Atlantic and all over Europe…
Milan, Nice, Monte Carlo, Cinque Terra, Pisa,
Venice, Rotenburg, Prague, Vienna, Salzburg,
Louvre in Paris, Eifel tower, Rome with the Framptons, Lech, Chamonix,
Caribbean (Eurodisney), Gamma Quadrant, cooking in Florence, Fussen, Venice,
Lido, Verona, Verzasca, London, Big Ben

…exploring Switzerland…
Interlaken, Rhein Falls, Lugano,
Luzern, Arosa, Montreux,
Zermatt, Engelberg (winter), Engelberg (summer)

…and just enjoying good times close to home…
2nd birthday, bumper cars at Swiss miniature, lounging around, work Christmas party,
sledding, throwing rocks in the Zugersee, hopp schweiz!, frolicking near Pride Rock,
rapeseed fields, learning about dandelions, pushing the stroller, reading to the kids,
changing diapers on the fly, 4th of July celebration, the zoo, Sunday walks

We love you and are looking forward to many more fun-filled years to come. Happy 30th.
